SI9 (Jianzhen)- “The Shoulder Freedom Point”

Jul 31, 2026

Today’s digital lifestyle places tremendous strain on our shoulders. Whether we’re working on laptops, driving long distances, lifting children, or scrolling endlessly on our phones, our upper back and shoulders often carry more tension than we realize.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), stagnant energy in the shoulder region can contribute to discomfort, limited range of motion, and muscular tightness. SI9 (Jianzhen) is a well-known acupressure point traditionally used to encourage healthy circulation of Qi and blood throughout the shoulder and upper arm.

While not a replacement for medical care, gentle acupressure can become a valuable addition to your daily self-care routine.

How to Find SI9 (Jianzhen)

SI9 is located on the back of the shoulder.

To locate it:

  • Relax your arm.
  • Feel for the back edge of your shoulder joint.
  • Locate the hollow just above the back of the armpit, slightly below the shoulder.
  • The point is usually tender when pressed.

How to Activate

  1. Use your thumb or opposite index finger.
  2. Apply firm but comfortable pressure.
  3. Massage using slow circular movements.
  4. Continue for 1–2 minutes.
  5. Repeat on the opposite shoulder.
  6. Practice once or twice daily, especially after long periods of sitting or repetitive upper-body activity.

Remember to breathe slowly and relax your shoulders while applying pressure.

Potential Benefits

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, SI9 may help support:

  • Relief of shoulder stiffness
  • Improved shoulder mobility
  • Reduced upper back muscle tension
  • Support for neck and shoulder circulation
  • Temporary relief from muscle tightness after exercise
  • Relaxation following prolonged computer work
  • Recovery from everyday postural strain
  • General upper-body comfort

Individual experiences vary, and acupressure should complement — not replace — professional medical evaluation when pain is severe, persistent, or follows an injury.

Fun Facts

“Jianzhen” translates roughly to “True Shoulder.”
Its name reflects its long-standing association with shoulder function in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Modern posture challenges make this point especially popular.
Remote work, smartphones, gaming, and prolonged driving have increased shoulder tension across nearly every generation.

Often combined with other points.
Holistic practitioners frequently pair SI9 with other shoulder and neck acupressure points to support more comprehensive relief.

Tips

  • Apply warmth first. A warm compress for 5–10 minutes before acupressure may help tight muscles relax.
  • Stretch afterward. Follow your acupressure session with gentle shoulder rolls or doorway chest stretches.
  • Check your posture. Keeping your monitor at eye level and your shoulders relaxed can reduce recurring tension.
  • Stay hydrated. Healthy muscles and connective tissues function better when adequately hydrated.
  • Listen to your body. Pressure should feel therapeutic — not painful. Reduce intensity if discomfort increases.

SI9 (Jianzhen), the Shoulder Freedom Point, offers a simple way to care for one of the hardest-working areas of the body. Whether you’re dealing with everyday muscle tightness from desk work, exercise, or modern technology habits, this acupressure point can become part of a relaxing self-care routine that encourages mobility, circulation, and overall upper-body comfort. When combined with good posture, movement, stretching, and holistic wellness practices, SI9 may help keep your shoulders feeling more comfortable and resilient.
